I found diamonds in my back yard!
So
can you! Here’s how!
Dr. Russell Conwell was a renowned minister, philanthropist, lawyer and orator.
A century ago, he traveled the world sharing a story called Acres of Diamonds.
It was
about a farmer who kept hearing amazing stories of people finding diamonds and becoming rich overnight.
So, he sold his farm and set off in search of diamonds himself.
He traveled far and wide, but never found any.
After years of searching, he died penniless and broke.
But ironically and tragically, diamonds were found on the farm he sold.
Yep, that’s right!
Diamonds were found in his back yard, or rather the back yard of the new owner of the farm… and his old farm became one of the largest diamond mines in the world.
He was literally living on acres of diamonds and didn’t know it.
I think the same is true of Black people and the
African American/Afro Caribbean story.
We have diamonds in our backyards and don’t know it.
Maya Angelou knew about her diamonds. In Still I Rise, she described her wealth this way.
I walk like I've got oil wells
pumping in my living room.
I laugh like
I've got gold mines
diggin' in my own back yard.
And I dance like I've got diamonds
at the meeting of my thighs.
